WFH during Covid

Worked from home during Covid?

Working from Home Tax Relief

The pandemic changed how many of us worked, with a significant number of employees working from home. If this applied to you, you might be eligible to claim tax relief for additional household expenses incurred while working remotely.

If your employer required you to work from home during the 2020/21 and/or 2021/22 tax years, you could be entitled to a tax refund. While the four-year rule may mean claims for 2020/21 are no longer possible, we can still help you check for other eligible refunds.

Working from home often increases household costs, and you shouldn’t miss out on relief that could help cover those expenses. To find out if this applies to you, you can visit the official government guidance page or simply contact us—we’d be more than happy to check your eligibility for you.

Timing Matters for Working from Home Expenses

When it comes to claiming tax relief for working from home, timing is everything. HMRC will only accept your claim if it’s submitted on time, so it’s important to act quickly.

You’re eligible to claim if your employer told you to work from home—it doesn’t matter whether it was for a few days or a few months, but claims aren’t valid if working from home was your personal choice. HMRC has reported receiving over 3 million claims for tax relief during the 2020/21 tax year alone, showing just how many people could benefit.

The tax relief covers additional household costs incurred due to working from home. The amount you can claim depends on the rate at which you pay tax.

What you might not know is that HMRC relaxed its rules during this period, allowing employees to claim a percentage of household costs, similar to what sole traders can claim. Certain conditions apply, but having worked at HMRC, I understand how to make these claims effectively to ensure you don’t miss out on what you’re owed.

For example:

If you pay the basic rate of 20% tax, you can claim £1.20 for tax relief on £6 of expenses (20% of £6).

HMRC allows backdated claims for up to four years, so don’t miss the opportunity to recover what you’re owed.
